Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Community newspapers are vital instruments for local governance, offering a platform to inform, educate, and engage residents on issues that directly affect them. In Lafia Local Government, Nasarawa State, these newspapers play a critical role in covering developmental projects, such as road construction, healthcare facilities, and educational improvements. Through their coverage, they provide transparency, accountability, and community involvement in development processes (Adamu & Usman, 2023). However, the quality and focus of reporting can significantly influence public perception. Balanced reporting that highlights both successes and challenges fosters trust and encourages citizen participation, while biased or superficial coverage may lead to misinformation and apathy. This study explores public perception of community newspapers’ coverage of developmental projects in Lafia, assessing the effectiveness of reporting in promoting awareness and participation.
